Slovenia, a European country in Central Europe, is known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes.
In Lake Bled, a glacial lake fed by thermal springs, there is an island with a church belonging to the town of Bled, and a medieval castle stands on the shore of the lake.
In Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, Baroque facades sit alongside 20th-century architecture by city-born architect Jože Plečnik, whose emblematic Tromostovje (Three Bridges) spans the winding Ljubljanica River.
Cycling in Slovenia
Exploring Slovenia by bike means variety, along the Drava or Sava rivers, over picturesque plateaus.
Or altitude and trekking, among others, in the Triglav National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Julian Alps (about 84,000 ha).
The Velo Europe stages through Slovenia lead along the rivers Drava and Sava. We can follow the Sava from its headwaters near Kransja Gora currently to Zagreb and pass the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
The Drava from Dravograd to Varazdin via Maribor.
From Villach we can follow the stages through Triglav to Bovec and further to Italy Opt Croatia.
Slovenia has a good railroad system and most of the stages in our Velo Europe system have a railroad station.
