Cycling in Austria

Austria has a multitude of lakes from east to west. From Lake Neusiedl in the far east, to the Salzkammergut lakes in Salzburg Land, to Lake Constance in the west.

A large part of Austria's rivers eventually flow into the Danube ( Mur- Drau - Lech - Isar - Inn
Salzburg's Salzach flows into the Inn and further into the Danube.

The rivers Traun, Enns and Ybbs also flow into the Danube.

A large part of the water from western Austria (Vorarlberg) flows into the Rhine-Lake Constance.

Along most of the lakes and rivers, Austria has fantastic bike paths and is bike friendly.

When cycling in Austria, we have to expect elevation gain, as most of the country is dominated by mountains.

Velo Europe has integrated most of Austria's rivers into the stage system, navigating us from one major Austrian city to the next.

On the way from one river valley to the next, we have to expect meters of altitude and in most cases cross a pass.
In the Regio trains we can carry the bikes.
Almost without exception, stage points in the Velo Europe network have a train station.
