Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and lies on the Danube. In the city of Linz, the Traun flows from the south into the Danube.

Linz, Austria's 3rd largest city, currently has a population of 200,000.
Linz's old town is worth a visit - Linz is built on culture and was voted Capital of Culture in 2009.

The largest employer in the country of Voelstalpine AG has its headquarters in Linz and Linz is therefore considered the steel city of Austria.

Velo Europe and cycling from Linz

The Velo Europe stages and routes around Linz are characterised by their location on the Danube.
However, some small and large tributaries, such as the Enns or Traun, flow into the Danube near the city, which we use on some routes from Linz on the way to other VEPs.

The airport bus 601 connects the city centre of Linz with the airport, travel time 22 min and single trip € 3,20 bike ride has to be checked.

The Velo Europe stages from Linz

1. Linz to Wels, approx 33 km, connection to Gmunden on the Traun with connection to the Salzkammergut

2. Linz to Enns, approx. 25 km, downstream on the Danube, connection option on the Danube downstream to Steyr or to Heinrichsbrunn

3. Linz to Heinrichsbrunn, approx. 30 km, connection option to Ybbs on the Danube

4. Linz to Untermühl on the Danube, approx. 37 km, with connection options to Passau (via Niederranna) or north into the Mühlviertel and on to the stages on the Vltava in the direction of VEP Prague

The Velo Europe routes from Linz

Linz to Graz

There are of course some options to get from Linz to Graz, but Velo Europe suggests you take the direct route along the river. Upstream along the Traun through the Traunviertel via Gmunden, along the Traunsee further via Bad Ischl to Bad Aussee.
From Bad Aussee via a connecting path to the Liezen an der Enns junction.
From Liezen in the Enns valley we currently have two options into the Mur valley, first downstream along the Enns through the Gesäuse and from Hiefllau in a southerly direction past the Erzberg to Leoben an der Mur.
Alternatively through the Seezthal and valley to St Michael im Lungau and then downstream along the Mur via Leoben to the Styrian capital Graz.

Linz to Salzburg

Some paths lead to Salzburg - the pure path along rivers along the Danube upstream to Passau, then along the Inn upstream to Braunau.
After Braunau the Salzach flows into the Inn and we follow the Salzach upstream via Oberndorf and on to Salzburg.
The second way through the Salzkammergut along some lakes.
We start at the Traun upstream to Gmunden at the Traunsee. Either from there or first from Bad Ischl to the Attersee or along the Attersee, then to the Mondsee.
From the Mondsee it is only a few kill meters to the shore of the Salzach and we drive the last meters upstream along the Salzach.

Linz to Prague

We leave the Danube at Niederanna after the Schlögener Schlinge and head north from the Danube through the Mühlviertel to Lake Lipno and the Czech border.
From there we head north through the historical region of Bohemia.
