On the way to Leipzig we use some rivers of the German river system. First we cycle from Frankfurt along the Main to Hanau.
In Hanau the Kinzig flows, an 86 km long river that rises in the Spessart.  Along the Kinzig towards the north upstream.
Then we leave the Kinzig towards the city of Fulda, a part of the river Fulda and then further into the valley of the Werra. Through the Werra valley upstream via Bad Salzungen to Schmalkalden.
At Schmalkalden we leave the Werra and cycle northeast into the Thuringian Forest, over the Rennsteig in the direction of Ilmenau. From Ilmenau we follow the Ilm downstream through the historic town of Weimar to the mouth of the river Saale.
From Großheringen at the mouth, now the Saale downstream past Naumburg to Weißenfels.
Finally from Weißenfels at the Saale in east direction along some canals and through parks into the city centre of Leipzig.
