Antwerp is a Belgian port city in the Flanders region and lies on the Scheldt about 88 km before its mouth into the North Sea.
The Scheldt flows into the city area into a funnel-shaped estuary which can be navigated by seagoing vessels. In Antwerp there is no bridge over the Schelde, only a tunnel.
The city area reaches in the north up to the border to the Netherlands and Belgium's capital Brussels lies only 40 km south.
Antwerp has the second largest port in Europe and is an important centre for the trade and processing of diamonds.
